David Manning, age 34, of Shelton, was arrested on Tuesday, April 6, by Shelton Police for lying about the event which he reported on Monday, March 15, said Detective Richard Bango.
According to Bango, on March 15, Manning called Shelton Police saying he had been robbed at gunpoint by two men on Myrtle Street.
Manning told officers the two men stole his vehicle and his cell phone during the robbery.
An investigation by the Detective Bureau revealed the vehicle was in an accident in Bridgeport the day prior where the driver fled the scene, Bango said.
It also showed that Manning was not truthful and the vehicle was in fact not stolen, he added.
Manning was charged with falsely reporting a theft of a vehicle and interfering with an officer.
He was released on a $5000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
